Project Planning
Planning Applications

Planning Applications are seldom straightforward these days. You have all sorts of issues to face such as Green Belt and environmental objections, traffic and transport plans, design, sustainability and so on. Despite all this it is important that you remain on good terms with the local Planning Authority, even when you think they are doing their best to put hurdles in your way. I have many years experience of negotiating with Planning Officers and can often anticipate and head off their objections, or provide strategies and solutions that meet their concerns.

If your buildings are Listed this need not necessarily be a major problem, indeed it can sometimes be good news in terms of potential VAT savings. It is essential to build a good relationship with the local Historic Buildings Officer because early and regular discussions can often bring them on side or at least ensure that your application for Listed Building Consent is presented in the best possible way.

Master Plans

School Governors and Local Planning Authorities like to see a strategic plan, looking forward over the next 5, 10 or even 15 years, showing the school’s major development proposals. This is helpful not only when it comes to negotiating Planning Consents, but also so that prospective parents can see what new facilities you may be planning for the future. It is also a useful tool for Development Directors or fundraisers. I can work with you in the preparation of a strategic ‘Master Plan’ and its presentation to the Planning Authority and other interested groups.

Project Planning

The planning and execution of any type of construction project in and around a busy school campus is a tricky business, requiring specialised knowledge and experience.

Careful consideration for the safety of staff and students may be obvious, but how many Consultants understand, for example, that builders cannot carry out noisy work during the public examination season or that there are Child Protection issues to be considered when your students are around? Perhaps your Boarding House refurbishment can only be carried out during school holiday periods and so breaking the work down into manageable phases is the only practical way to achieve that.

Not all members of staff teach a full timetable and empty classrooms may be put to better use. It is becoming increasingly common for schools to provide excellent staffroom facilities where teachers can work comfortably and effeciently, rather than dedicating a classroom to each teacher. I have the day to day experience to understand these issues and the knowledge to overcome them. I can put together an experienced project team and act for you as your Client Agent or Project Manager.
