Conversion of the ‘school shop’ building into 6 classrooms and a Further Education Department
This large 100 year old building had enjoyed several uses over the years, from the original school joiner’s workshop to its most recent as the school outfitters and bookshop. With a footprint of approx. 250 sq.m. on each of two floors I needed to find more space if I was to meet the design brief, which was to provide six classrooms, departmental offices and a generous Careers and Further Education Department.
By leaving the main roof structure intact, but lifting the three large dormer windows on the front elevation and introducing some conservation roof lights to the rear, we were able to convert the roof space to provide a third floor and thereby gain two additional classrooms. I successfully argued against the provision of both a lift and a secondary escape staircase by submitting a well thought out Access Statement.
The conversion was completed within budget in less than 12 months. Although situated in the busy academic heart of the school there were no significant problems of noise or other disruption to the teaching timetable.
