Upgrading of boarding houses
I have undertaken the complete upgrading of three large boarding houses during my time as Estate Bursar in schools. Each has cost in excess of £1 million pounds and each had to be broken down into phases that could be completed in either the Easter or Summer holiday periods.
It is certainly a worrying time when, on that first day of the holidays, contractors strip out the old rooms and you have to be confident that they will put it all back together in time for the pupils to return.
The secret is to first plan the entire scheme, showing how the house will look on completion. Work can then be broken down into phases, suitable for either the 4 week or 8 week holiday period, always allowing time for house cleaning, stocking and bed making before the start of term. This takes a degree of experience, particularly as the electrical and plumbing services and the fire detection systems all have to be maintained between the phases.
