New school Medical Centre
I have been responsible for the conversion and extension of an existing residential building into a new school medical centre. I established the initial requirement brief after extensive internal consultation and then tested this by researching the provision in similar schools.
The question of whether you opt for ‘on call’ or resident nursing staff is a key decision. It also seems to be the case that the number of required bed spaces is reducing, as parents often prefer that their children come home rather than stay at school when they are unwell.
Key points to consider are:
- the number of bed spaces and the mix of singles and shared
- en-suite or house shower / bathrooms
- consulting rooms
- treatment rooms
- staff offices and security of medical records
- waiting room
- kitchen facilities
- staff accommodation – residential or otherwise
The selection of an experienced Architect is important and so I interviewed and sought fee bids from three Practices who had carried out a lot of work in the field of doctors surgeries.
