New modern Languages Centre providing 14 classrooms
Selecting an Architect who could meet the requirement to design a modern building which would sit easily alongside its Grade 2 neighbours was not an easy task. I arranged for a shortlist of three to present their conceptual designs to the Governing Body and then integrated the successful Architect into the Design Team.
Constructed on the site of an existing building, right in the centre of the academic heart of the school, the logistics were demanding. By using the summer holiday period for demolition and ground works and then reopening a disused road access to the rear of the site to access the contractor’s compound, construction was possible without impacting upon the day to day life of the school. Throughout the 15 month construction period only three large deliveries had to pass through the school, due to the use of a large crane which lifted all the materials from the contractor’s compound into the building site.
One of the school’s main examination halls was very close to the building site, however we were able to control site noise during the public examination season by working closely with the contractor on a day to day basis.
The building was handed over on time and within budget and it has made a significant contribution to the historic centre of the school.
