Biography
I am a Chartered Building Surveyor with wide experience in the profession. Having qualified in London I moved to the West Country where, for many years, I was the founding and managing partner of a large Building Surveying practice. My work has covered all aspects of the profession including:
- domestic and commercial surveys
- dilapidations
- planned maintenance
- planning negotiations / applications
- pre and post contract project work
- project management / lead consultant
- Listed Buildings
I have also carried out an extensive amount of Expert Witness and Arbitration work, having been a member of The Institute of Arbitrators for many years.
In 1999 I left my practice to become the Property Manager at a large independent boarding and day school in Sussex. After three years in post I joined Charterhouse School as their Estate Bursar, where I remained for seven years. My experience in the Independent Schools sector is very broad, having enjoyed ten years at the sharp end. I have:
- prepared and implemented Planned Maintenance programmes
- organised cyclical maintenance and upgrading work
- organised annual work to match revenue and project budgets
- managed a large staff housing portfolio
- carried out a long term strategic and Master Planning exercise
- extensive experience of the Planning system, having made and coordinated the submission of many Planning Applications and Appeals, including to Listed Buildings
- been responsible for the design and implementation of numerous upgrading and refurbishment projects to boarding houses, academic rooms, sports centres, medical areas etc.
- been responsible for the construction of a number of major new build and conversion projects for which I have put together and managed the Consultant Design Teams and acted either as the Client Agent or Project Manager
In addition I have been responsible for large in-house Maintenance and Grounds Departments, where I have updated working practices and implemented a new networked Works Order Chit ‘Helpdesk’ to replace the old paper based system.
